Pool decks pick up stains no other surface does: white crusty buildup along the coping, chalky rings where water features splash, bleached spots from chlorine, and dull patches from acid. Knowing which one you have matters, because the fix for one can damage another.
Common Pool Deck Stains
| What You See | Likely Cause | Where |
|---|---|---|
| White, crusty or scaly buildup | Calcium and minerals left as pool water evaporates | Coping, splash zones, water features |
| Powdery white haze | Efflorescence or dried salt | Damp areas, salt water pools |
| Bleached or lighter patches | Chlorine or shock spills | Where chemicals are stored or added |
| Dull, rough spots on stone | Acid etching from pH chemicals; see etching on travertine and marble | Near the equipment and skimmer |
| Rust spots | Metal ladders, rails, or furniture | Around fixtures |
Removing Calcium from Concrete Pavers
- Rinse and scrub with a stiff nylon brush to remove loose scale.
- Use a cleaner made for calcium and efflorescence on concrete pavers, following the label carefully and testing a small area first.
- Rinse thoroughly so no cleaner stays in the joints or runs into the pool.
- Let it dry, then re-sand and seal so new deposits wipe off more easily.

Calcium on Travertine and Marble
Many calcium and efflorescence removers are acidic, and acid etches travertine and marble. On natural stone, use only products labeled safe for it, work gently, and expect light deposits to come off over a few cleanings rather than all at once. Heavy scale on stone coping is a job for a pro. See how to clean a travertine pool deck.
Bleached Spots from Chlorine
Chlorine and shock can lighten paver color where they spill. Cleaning and a color-enhancing sealer help blend the area; very bleached spots may stay a little lighter. Store and mix chemicals off the deck.
Preventing Pool Deck Stains
- Rinse coping and splash zones with fresh water often.
- Keep pool chemistry balanced; ask your pool professional about calcium hardness.
- Add chemicals carefully and rinse any splashes right away.
- Keep the deck sealed so deposits sit on top instead of soaking in.
Our pool deck cleaning and sealing treats calcium and stains first and includes same-day pool cleaning. We serve pool decks across FishHawk, Valencia Del Sol, Tampa Palms, and Tampa Bay.
We needed to have our pool deck pavers completely refinished. We called three companies to compare quotes. Two were "full service" providers (move patio furniture on/off, clean pool after job was complete), but their prices were SIGNIFICANTLY higher. Steven did an EXCELLENT, PROFESSIONAL job using the same product materials as the high priced competitors. We moved the furniture and cleaned the pool ourselves and saved MANY hundreds of dollars. We will be recommending his services to all of our friends and neighbors. Thank you, Steven!
Pool Chemical and Calcium Stains on Pavers and Stone FAQs
What is the white crust on my pool deck?
Usually calcium and minerals left behind as splashed pool water evaporates, especially along the coping and water features.
How do I remove calcium from pavers?
Scrub off loose scale, use a cleaner made for calcium on concrete pavers after a test spot, rinse well, then re-sand and seal.
Can I use calcium remover on travertine?
Only products labeled safe for natural stone. Many calcium removers are acidic and will etch travertine and marble.
Why are there light spots on my pool deck?
Chlorine or shock spills can bleach color, and acid splashes can etch stone. Cleaning and sealing help blend lighter spots.
Does sealing stop calcium buildup?
It doesn't stop minerals from landing, but sealed surfaces keep them on top so they rinse and wipe off much more easily.
How do I prevent calcium stains around my pool?
Rinse splash zones often, keep pool chemistry balanced, and keep the deck sealed.
