The right cleaner makes a paver or stone surface look new. The wrong one etches stone, bleaches color, kills landscaping, or harms pets. What's safe depends on the surface: a cleaner that's fine on concrete pavers can ruin travertine or marble.

Protecting Plants, Pets, and Pools

  • Wet the plants first, then rinse them again after cleaning.
  • Keep pets and kids off the area until it's rinsed and dry.
  • Rinse toward lawn or drains, never into the pool.
  • Never mix chemicals. Bleach mixed with ammonia or acid releases toxic gas.
  • Wear gloves and eye protection with anything stronger than soap.

Start With the Least Aggressive Option

Most dirt comes off with water, a pH-neutral cleaner, and a surface cleaner at controlled pressure. Reserve stronger products for specific stains: degreaser for oil, a rust remover for irrigation stains, a mildew cleaner for black spots. Our paver stain removal chart matches each stain to a method, and mold, mildew, and algae on pavers covers shaded areas.

Why Acid Needs a Professional

Acid can remove heavy efflorescence and some mineral stains from concrete pavers, but too strong a mix or too long a dwell leaves a rough, faded surface. On travertine and marble it etches the stone right away. If someone offers to acid wash a stone pool deck, find another contractor.

I want to say we had a very good experience with Steven. He came out within a day of me calling him, he gave us a estimate and came out as soon as he could. They had the job done in a day and it ended up being the exact amount of the estimate. My wife and I are so happy with the work.

Safe Cleaning Chemicals for Pavers, Travertine, and Marble FAQs

What is the safest cleaner for pavers?

A pH-neutral cleaner is safe on concrete pavers, clay brick, travertine, and marble, and handles most routine dirt.

Is bleach safe on pavers?

Diluted chlorine bleach can treat mildew on concrete pavers with care, but it can lighten color and harm plants. Avoid it on stone unless labeled stone-safe.

Can I use muriatic acid on pavers?

Only professionals should use acid, diluted and briefly, on concrete pavers. Never use acid on travertine or marble.

Is vinegar safe for travertine?

No. Vinegar is an acid and etches travertine and marble.

Are paver cleaners safe for pets?

Most are safe once rinsed and dry. Keep pets off the area during cleaning and until it's fully rinsed.

How do I protect plants when cleaning pavers?

Wet plants before cleaning, rinse them again afterward, and direct runoff away from beds.
