Shellstone and coquina give Florida pool decks a cool, coastal look. Both are made of compressed shells, which makes them soft, porous, and easy to stain.
Cleaning Shellstone Safely
- Low pressure only
- Non-acidic, stone-safe cleaners
- Gentle agitation for mildew in the pores

Sealing Shellstone
A breathable penetrating sealer reduces how much water and dirt soak in, while keeping the natural texture. Learn more about caring for limestone and natural stone and our Shellock care guide.
Coral Stone and Florida Keystone
Keystone, often called coral stone, is a fossil-rich limestone quarried in the Florida Keys. Like shellstone and coquina, it's very porous and fairly soft, with visible shells and coral in the surface. It's popular for pool decks and coping because it stays cool.
- Clean at low pressure with stone-safe products; never acid.
- Expect mildew and tannin stains in shaded, damp areas.
- Seal with a breathable penetrating sealer, not a glossy film that can trap moisture.
