Both polymeric sand and joint-stabilizing sealer aim to keep paver joints firm. They just get there in different ways.
Polymeric Sand
Sand mixed with binders that activate with water and harden in the joint. It's common on new installs and can be very effective when installed carefully. See PolySweep polymeric sand.

Joint-Stabilizing Sealer
Regular ASTM C144 joint sand is installed, then a sealer like Hurricane CAT 5 soaks into the sand and hardens it while sealing the paver surface.
Which is better for resealing?
For most cleaning and resealing jobs, joint sand plus a joint-stabilizing sealer is simple and effective, and it renews the joints every time you reseal. Trident has a technical bulletin comparing the two, linked on our products pages.
I would give them 10 stars if I could. Steve came out the day after I called him on a Sunday. He was very professional & he explained every detail of what they would do, including cleaning all of the pavers including getting all of the mold & weeds that were coming thru them. He also said that they would clean the screens on the porch as well as the mold on the outside of the pavers outside the patio & our front porch. He said they would put 3 coats of sealant as well as fill the areas that needed sand. They even moved the heavy furniture. We went over the price which was great, & 2 days later while we were away and did everything he said they would & did a great job. Steve even came out when we got home to help move furniture back onto the porch. I will definitely use them again & tell all my friends about them.
Polymeric Sand vs. Joint-Stabilizing Sealer FAQs
Can I seal over polymeric sand?
Often, yes, once it has fully cured. Check the sand manufacturer's guidance first.
Which lasts longer?
Both can last years when installed correctly. Joint-stabilizing sealer is refreshed each time you reseal, which makes long-term maintenance simple.
Which do you use?
For most cleaning and resealing jobs, we wash in ASTM C144 joint sand and harden it with a joint-stabilizing sealer. We also use PolySweep polymeric sand where it fits the project.
